No discussion about a money system is complete without considering the systemic change we are undergoing, due to the exponentially increasing amount of automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Let's take the trucking industry for example. In the United States alone, we have over 3.5 million truck drivers. And yet, autonomous (self-driving) semi-trailer trucks, garbage trucks and buses have already made successful test runs. Big players are putting serious investments in this space. We have already seen the impact on another popular job, the taxi driver, due to the rise of ride-sharing (e.g. Uber, Lyft etc.) But let's look the prospects of the auto industry:
“Each shared autonomous vehicle will obviate the need for nine traditional vehicles.”
“A vehicle-sharing penetration rate of just 6% would slash new car sales by more than half.”
A radical step-function change is occurring in the vehicle world. But it's also continuing on a steep trajectory in agriculture. For example, companies are working on robotic fruit-pickers, which of course will affect a popular source of work for farm laborers (especially migrant workers).
Never letting a crisis go to waste, in comes clamor from the “humanist” billionaires for the “robot tax” and the Universal Basic Income (UBI). Taxing anything to slow down the inevitable is asinine, and only distorts the system further. And offering a UBI in our current system, administered by the hands of the few, only creates a form of enslavement whereby the few dictate the terms of behavior for the slaves to get their UBI payments (and likely also indirectly dictates their voting habits). Such thinking, at best, attempts to treat the symptoms – the real issues are never fixed and the system becomes perverted further. Automation is not inherently a problem any more than living a better life is a problem. And a UBI is not necessarily a bad thing in a positive sum paradigm, but we don't live in one, now do we? I bring up either of these two issues because they exemplify the “cause célèbre” debates whipped up to get the proletariat agitating for their own enslavement. We'll talk soon about a crypto which solves both of these naturally.
Now, Buckminster Fuller saw the absurdity of our economic system, in light of rapid technological advances in the 20th century. Sometimes it take a truly brilliant mind that envisions things differently, to point out what is otherwise blatantly obvious:
“It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. ... The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living.”
Fuller wanted us to work less, and live and learn more. Quite the concept!
